What? That line is worth five million dollars? I bet my little brother could do that! So, what makes art valuable? Is it the gold flakes the artist glued to the canvas? Or perhaps the million-dollar idea it conveys? More importantly, how does all this relate to me? In this engaging and enlightening module, students will explore the intricate relationship between art and economics—the sophisticated terms adults use to discuss value, money, and business. Through interactive projects, they’ll design their own currency, engage in "trading" art supplies to understand bartering, and reinterpret famous artworks from a value perspective.
Tailored for students aged 8 to 12, this session marries creativity with critical thinking, prompting students to view art not just as a medium for personal expression but as part of a broader cultural and economic narrative. By the end of this module, students will have compiled a portfolio of works that showcase their newfound understanding of value, both artistic and personal. They will emerge with a richer appreciation of how art influences and is influenced by the world around them.
Students are required to bring their own art supplies, which can be supplemented by ordering a starter pack from the Studio. As the activities are designed for independent exploration, parental assistance is not necessary.
