A simple clay jar. A strange word. And one of the most unexpected design stories in history.
In this hands-on holiday workshop, we’ll uncover how the world’s most famous savings icon — the piggy bank — was actually invented by mistake. It all started with a type of orange clay called pygg... and ended with a pig-shaped pot that no one saw coming.
We’ll begin the day by imagining and designing our own piggy bank characters — not just pigs, but dragons, vending machines, robots, treasure chests, or anything else that might guard your coins. We’ll think about what these characters protect, how they store things, and who they’re designed for.
In the afternoon, we’ll bring our ideas to life in code. We’ll build an interactive Scratch project where coins are saved, spent, or stashed away — all starring your original piggy bank creation.
We’ll explore how history, humour, and imagination come together in design — and how even the strangest mix-ups can lead to something iconic.
The programme runs from 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM, with drop-off from 8:15 AM and pick-up until 4:30 PM. We ease into the day with relaxed play, and wind down gently with art, games, or a short film.
Whether you're an early bird or an afternoon explorer, we've got you covered! select am or pm sessions to book- it's that simple!
