What makes a character iconic? Is it the way it looks, the story it suggests, or the balance of strange and familiar that makes you keep looking? In this module, we will take a critical look at Labubu by Kasing Lung, one of the most recognisable art toy characters today. Instead of following trends, we will study why it works and use that understanding to invent characters of our own.
Over nine sessions, students will explore the art of character design. We will also step into 3D, turning sketches into small sculpted models that are textured with personality.
By the end, each student will have created a unique character that reflects their imagination, supported by a 3D model. Along the way, we will build sketching confidence, discover the basics of sculptural design, and learn that even the simplest idea can carry big personality.
